Give and Take

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

"I believe slavery is a much maligned institution; if we had slavery today, we would not have this welfare mess."

"We shouldn't help the poor" and "slavery wasn't that bad." Not my first choice for a role model.

I can find quotes from extremist blogs that refute the credibility of any given person that's quoted something, too.

Maybe some context?

He also was quoted by the Baptist convention in 2000 as saying "the blessing of racial and ethnic diversity and acknowledged that all races possess full dignity by the creative intention of God."

So which is it? I'm no religious nut, but does that quote really sound like someone who wishes we had slavery again simply to make our welfare problem go away?

BUT

This whole discussion has nothing to do with the quote I posted...they are good words that I believe in, so don't distract from my point by throwing slavery out in every post I have. We are the ones who want to be colorBLIND, not color CONSCIOUS. Everybody rocks, who freakin' cares what color they are, let's move on. Get out of the 60's. Don't forget: it was Democrats who started the KKK.

No I see what you're saying. I have no idea what context the quote was in, but I can't imagine in what context that quote would be appropriate.

"Don't forget: it was Democrats who started the KKK."

It was conservative Southern Democrats. 100 years later, Democrats passed the Civil Rights Act. Now which party do those conservative Southern racists belong to??
