College comes at the end of ones impressionable years. If you teach yourself that at the end life is a party, you will not be a very productive member of society. If you are in a war at that age you will see life as a battle, but if you study hard and do your homework you will spend your life making sure you know what you are doing and make better decisions than most people do. That will make you a successful leader and decision maker. The individual makes those decisions for themself and will live with that decision for the rest of their lives. The college must also give direction and grade so that the student learns that if they do not do their homework they will fail. That is also a good lesson even if it means some have to drop out. Rugged individualism can succeed. But it is also important to realize that not all are mature enough to make all the right decisions at that age and fail them if they have not learned.

If you intentionally kill people or damage property, that's not necessarily in your best interest. You may have the short term gain of taking someone's money, etc., but the long term costs are jail time.

Likewise, companies don't necessarily face jail time or fines, but they do face huge losses or even insolvency if they knowingly betray their customers. They do not intentionally hurt customers--as in your example, if you accidentally destroy property or kill someone, the penalties are minimal.

If I do something that kills people and destroys property, you'll be clamoring for my head. You won't consider my "damaged reputation" as sufficient punishment to keep me out of jail. But let a corporation commit such malfeasance, and you're quick to defend their ability to pay a relatively small fine and go on with their corporate life without further infringement on their liberty.

By the way, GM won't be government owned for long. They're planning to repay their bailout early.

Interesting article, but I see it as another example of conservatives trying to rewrite American history to fit their ideology. It doesn't surprise me when they try to paint over all the good FDR's New Deal accomplished, because conservative ideology states that all government programs are evil and don't work.

Wow—so not only do you want a balanced budget amendment that would bring to an end our ability to go to war (feel free to point to the last war we fought without deficit spending), you also want to tie it to a flat tax that would keep us from raising the revenue necessary to pay off the debt.

Brandon, I could go for a ban on private health insurance. Create a real free market. make it possible for patients to effectivly price and comparison-shop for medical services. If you can create a genuine free market in health care, you might actually solve some problems.

But call me when you figure out how expecting parents rushed to the hospital after a car accident, floating in and out of consciousness, are supposed to behave like rational market actors.

Ultimately, health care is not a free market commodity. It's a human right.

True! But I don't think PACs will go anywhere, although I'd have to read the court opinion.

Individuals are still limited to contributing $4000 per year to a specific campaign, so PACs will still allow wealthy individuals to contribute above and beyond that $4000 limit.

Yeah, I don't like rapists and perverts, either. Sure, run-of-the-mill candy-store robbers can have their Miranda rights, but those sickos who rape women and children should never see the inside of a courtroom. String 'em up! They deserve it! The rule of law is only for us good people!

And now, back to reality.

We are only as good as our treatment of the lowest among us. You should have stopped at "I truly believe in treating people as human beings." The rest made you sound like the typical guns-and-glory hypocrite who doesn't really believe in the strength of our Constitution and the rule of law.
